Silver With A Touch of Gold

The table tennis team of Nosov Magnitogorsk State Technical University was honoured to represent Russia in men’s team competitions.

The trip to Olomouc was sponsored by the Ministry of Physical Training and Sports of the Chelyabinsk Region and NMSTU.

The Magnitogorsk team qualified for the semi-finals, where the Russian tennis players lost to a stronger Polish team who are a part of the Polish Table Tennis Super League, one of the leading table tennis championships in Europe.

In singles, Ilia Zhidkov and Kirill Gerasimenko from the NMSTU team both lost to their counterparts from Poland in the quarter-finals.

In doubles, the Magnitogorsk players easily made it all the way to the semi-finals, where they faced a pair from the Czech Republic, who had won silver medals in team competitions earlier this year, with one of the Czech players having a title of singles champion of 2016. The NMSTU students went through a very dramatic match, which they won to face a pair from Poland in the finals. And even though the Polish team were more successful, the players from Magnitogorsk were fighting to the last being not an easy win.
