Researchers from NMSTU and Ural Research, Development and Production Facility Granted A Patent for New Steelmaking Process

In January 2017, the research team of the Department of Metallurgy and Casting of the NMSTU Institute of Metallurgy, Mechanical Engineering and Materials Processing, together with the Ural Research, Development and Production Facility, was granted a patent by the Russian Federal Service for Intellectual Property for a new Basic Oxygen Steelmaking process.

The new process uses siderite ore as partial substitution of the ferrous scrap and as an iron-bearing material and a slag-forming agent. Due to its relatively easy application and efficiency, the new process can be adopted by the major steel makers of the Ural Federal District and across the rest of the country:

  • Magnitogorsk Iron and Steel Works;
  • Chelyabinsk Metallurgical Plant;
  • EVRAZ Nizhniy Tagil Iron and Steel Works;
  • EVRAZ Consolidated West Siberian Metallurgical Plant;
  • Novolipetsk Steel;
  • Severstal.

The key ideas of the research were presented at the 14th International Congress of Steel Makers (Electrostal, 2016) and at the All-Russia Forum “Economics of Russia: Success and Prosperity for Everybody”, which was held in Magnitogorsk in 2016 presided by the Russian Prime Minister.

The research results are mentioned in 13 articles.
